Having the Ajibe Cleaned Out

Here are Roberto and Consalo cleaning out the Ajibe for the first time, but unfortunately not the last. This will have to be done every year or two, dependent on the water conditions.

Flooding in San Antonio Tlayacapan (arroyo)

Here is a video of the flood we had today in our village of San Antonio Tlayacapan.
The roads in our area are closed today to all truck traffic since the rains have washed out the sand beneath the interlocking bricks and has caused severe buckling and damage. We are stranded in our house since we can't drive out or in. The highway to the airport is closed. No repairs to our roads can take place till after the rainy season, which should be over in about a months time. Not quite sure what we will do? Reports so far have stated that cars are buried in mud and people have died. Military Humvees are forming up outside of Joco and are due to patrol the area that has been most damaged to prevent looting. The governor of Jalisco just left with his helicopter after a brief visit on the intersection of Chapala - Jocotepec highway and the street / river coming down from El Parque. Word on the street is that 40 people died in San Juan Cosala. Unfortunately we can't confirm any of the above information regarding the surrounding area since this was info posted on the local forum.

Brutal storm wallops Chapala

A violent overnight storm that drenched the Chapala area at midweek left extensive damages in its wake, including the collapse of a nine-meter stretch of one lane on the Libramiento. At press time, Civil Protection chief Osbaldo Sandoval reported that the by-pass road would be closed for repairs during most of the day Friday, September 7.
The five-meter-deep gash in the roadway was located near the entrance to the Mision Chula Vista subdivision. Loose earth and rocks unleashed by the collapse and propelled by a torrent of rainwater swept down a nearby cobblestone road linking the Libramiento to the highway in San Antonio Tlayacapan. The washout cut off access to homes and businesses situated on Calle Allen W. Lloyd as it dumped mud and debris across the highway and into several buildings located in the vicinity.
According to Sandoval, the downpour peaked between 11 p.m. Wednesday and 3 a.m. the next day, dumping 86 millimeters of rain on the area.
A rollover accident reported in Riberas del Pilar at 12:35 a.m. was attributed to deep water on the roadway aggravated by excessive speed. Debris slides occurred at several other points along the Libramiento and Chapala-Jocotepec highway. A number of flooded streets and homes were also reported in Chapala’s downtown area.
