El Monumento a los Niños Héroes

The monument is located in the glorieta where Avenida Niños Héroes and Avenida Chapultepec intersect.
Technical Data: Height (tip) 50.00 m /Construction end 1951

A very impressive sight as the cars circle the roundabout.
The Monumento a los Niños Héroes (Monument to the Boy Heroes) commemorates the 1847 battle between the United States and Mexico at Chapultepec Castle in Mexico City. Chapultepec Castle was a military school and home; it was unable to withstand the battle waged by the U.S. forces.

During the course of the fighting, in which Mexico was defeated, one general and six young cadets lost their lives in defense of their country. Legend has it that when just one cadet remained, he wrapped himself with the Mexican flag and leaped from the tower to protect the flag from capture.

At the top of the monument is a feminine sculpture which represents Mexico. She wears a long tunic and holds a garland between her hands. At her feet is the national symbol of Mexico: the eagle, standing on a cactus and devouring a serpent.

At the bottom of the monument are statues of the child heroes who gave their lives for Mexico. The inscription in brass letters reads, "They Died for their Country." Each of the boys' names is inscribed in gold.

The monument is located in the glorieta where Avenida Niños Héroes and Avenida Chapultepec intersect. - Mexico Cooks!

We had the honour to attend an art show, a traves de tus ojos, yesterday due to the generous invitation of our friend Ricardo and his friends presenting. The artist, Jorge Ermilo Espinosa Torre, and his wonderful partner Becky Alonzo, put on an exhibit that was unlike any art we have ever seen. It was difficult to imagine that pigments placed on a canvas could produce images that were so photo realistic and emotional. More of Jorge's work can be seen at http://www.espinosatorre.mx.

He now happily resides with his wife, Sascha, and two dogs, Zoe and Tallulah, in Ajijic, Mexico where he greatly enjoys growing orchids and other tropicals outdoors,year-around.Steve holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in horticulture from Ohio State University and Cornell University respectively.

BTW, it is not all that it states, i.e. "During the rainy season, the air is thick with mosquitoes." There are bobos, which are like fruit flies and don't bite, annoying but not mosquitoes. I just got my Kindle Wireless Reading Device and it has opened up a whole new world of books once again. Back in Toronto going to the library and getting books was easy, not here. Now with the Kindle I simple go online and get most of the books I want. The unit holds 3,500 books, so there isn't any lack of material to read and more can be added and removed when required. It also allows me to read my email...

Terry was a friend to many of us. He was a walking companion and/or friend to many people and fellow dogs. The resident cats however, will not miss Terry!!

Terry belonged to no one, and yet he belonged to all of us. You were indeed fortunate if your terrace or home was chosen as a special resting place. In many ways, Terry was the heart and soul of this place. We have lost our Mascot and our mascota. He will be greatly missed.

Gollaz lies dead at the side of the road just two blocks from Chapala City Hall

Jose Guadalupe Gollaz Mejia, second officer in command of the Chapala police department, was assassinated in broad daylight Wednesday, May 5, on Avenida Francisco Madero, the city’s main thoroughfare.

The official was gunned down at around 1:30 p.m., just two blocks north of the City Hall building. According to several bystanders at the crime scene, Gollaz was approaching the spot where he had parked his silver Toyota Tacoma pickup for a lunch break at a nearby restaurant when he was intercepted by three unidentified assailants who opened fire.

The 42-year-old police official was downed by various bullets fired at close range, including apparently fatal hits to the neck and chest. He collapsed next to the median strip in the south bound lane of traffic and was pronounced dead on the scene a short time later. - Guadalajara Reporter

Penny needed a MRI for a back problem. We just walked into the facility and got one the same day for 3950 pesos ($330 CDN). Not sure how long the wait would have been back in TO, but surely not the same day. It was not a pleasant expedience since the tunnel she had to enter was very claustrophobic and lasted 40 minutes. Looks a lot easier on House.

Long-time Lakeside resident Douglas Robert Lamb passed away in a Guadalajara hospital December 11. Doug was the first person we met in Chula Vista Norte. The date of his passing coincidentally happens to be the same day as the passing of our friend Charlie last year.

We traveled for a visit near the village of San Luciano, to see our friend Nick and help set up the computer and get Skype operational. After a few hours of technical manipulations with the laptop, we went to Jocotepec for lunch. The pizza and lasagna were exceptional.

Lorena Ochoa is currently the number one ranked female golfer in the world.

We were very fortunate to be given passes to the Lorena Ochoa Invitational today. The course and facilities were spectacular. Here is more info on the event: Lorena Ochoa Invitational.
The GPS did take us to the Guadalajara Country Club, however the map did not take into account that the entrance has been sealed and moved to the east portion of the course! Membership for the club stands at $400,000.00 US, not pesos!

The Day of the Dead (El Día de los Muertos or All Souls' Day) is a holiday celebrated in Mexico and by Latin Americans living in the United States and Canada. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died.
